COMPASSION
Overview: Cole's ability as a spirit of Compassion is to sense the pain in people and what it would take to ease that pain, even if it's something he himself can't do. He exists to help quell the suffering of the world. NOTE: Cole's not human, sometimes he kinda fumbles and makes things worse because he doesn't say things right.
Specifics: It comes to Cole not as a simple "Wow he's bothered by these crimes he committed in his past that he's been struggling to atone for, he needs to know he's done enough to make it right." Instead he seems to feel the pain as they felt it, albeit from a removed position, and most of his party banters are him repeating another characters' thought process they might have had years ago when the hurt happened, then asking them about it. He can also sense things that would ease that pain to a certain extent, whether it be absolution, company, or something that will remind them of one who makes them happy.
So what does this mean for you: Due to
FORGET
Overview: He's not 'real', so Cole can make people forget that he exists after he helps them. It doesn't matter that they don't remember him, what matters is he helped. And this way they don't have to question or be frightened by why a strange boy would know exactly what they needed to hear.
Specifics: Cole has the ability to inflict laser-guided amnesia on a person related specifically to himself, wiping himself from their memories. He usually only does a surface wipedown. They might remember there was a strange boy, but they wouldn't recognize Cole as that boy. He can completely scrub himself from someone's memory if he tries hard enough (if the Inquisitor manages to get enough disapproval, Cole will wipe himself from their memories and his codex will read "The Inquisition is not aware of anyone by that name." with no one ever mentioning him again.)
So what does this mean for you: Often it's only used to erase about a minute or two of memory - just long enough for Cole to comfort someone then leave. This is also about the only time he uses it, so it's more or less a moot point if he can't get a read on your character. He also sometimes uses it if he really screws up on what he says to try and make someone feel better, effectively abusing it as a restart for the conversation to try again. There's no ill-effects from the memory wipe. Technically speaking it's actually the natural result of dealing with a spirit, Cole's just got better control over it. Feel free to say that this has failed, or let it work for a short period of time only to have the memories return later. I'll leave it up to everyone to decide for themselves if it works if Cole tries for it, this is just the "under ideal conditions" example. ETA: As of a conversation with Dorian, Cole now does not intentionally mind-wipe as he was told it was "Rude to do without permission". It's entirely possible that his powers will work on their own even if he doesn't intentionally activate them, however. Again, I'll be leaving that up to all of you for what you think would be interesting and/or funny. 8D
INVISIBILITY
Overview: Cole can turn invisible, or otherwise seen as unimportant and overlooked.
Specifics: When completely shrouded, Cole pass through crowds unnoticed. He can slip a ring of keys out of a guard's pocket if he's quiet about it in an otherwise empty hallway aside from the two of them. People will walk around him without realizing what they're doing. Usually he's just under a vague shroud of 'this person is not worth really noticing, scrawny scarecrow-hatted boys are totally normal around these parts' that only works as long as he doesn't talk to people. He can, if he pushes himself, shroud another person as well. This is extremely draining for him, and if the other person moves or speaks at all it fails, but technically it is possible.
So what does this mean for you: This is about his only power that works consistently, but needless to say it's not going to be active when he's interacting with people unless stated otherwise. Because that would be darn silly. People who are spirits(or demons) themselves/possessed by spirits/or are cats seem to be able to see past this even when he's trying.
POSSESSION
Overview: The thing that makes spirits and demons so feared. They can take possession of a person.
Specifics: Possession can be a complete and total control of a person, using that body as if it was their own. Alternately, he can slip into their minds without actively taking control. Admittedly this 'can' is a bit hopeful.
So what does this mean for you: This is mainly on here in case anyone wants to do this for plot-related reasons. Cole is not good at these things (better at observing rather than controlling) and any amount of willpower, even for those not magically inclined, will bounce him back. In the game Inquisition he only uses these powers once, when the Inquisitor already has a demon trying to possess them and Cole hops in their mind as well to help the Inquisitor evict said demon. He doesn't like to nor want to use this and won't unless (like with the Inquisitor) it is absolutely required for helping a person.
Compassion and Forget are his two main abilities I'd like permission/information regarding. Invisibility is mainly just to explain, and Possession is just there to say what it does in case you want to use it for a plot. Unless specifically requested it will not be used.
